Like an alcoholic falling off the wagon, the Scramble at The Berkshire made up for a whole season without a drop of rain in just one day. But there was also sun, shadows, rainbows and some pretty good scoring!

Not everyone managed to arrive for the 30 minute-delayed start – thank you Just Stop Oil protestors – and Paolo and his calculator worked overtime (as Lee Smith played only half the holes) to work out that the team of Neil Bennett, Duncan Farmer, Simon Taylor & Lee were, on count back, the winners.

In second place, were Jamie Weir, Dylan Dronfield, Paul Kelso, Dean Eaton, who also clocked 59.9 points. They could easily be spotted later in the carpark, grinning as they carried their Jeroboams of rosé!

Sky’s Bruce McKellar and Marc Souter, supported by husband and wife duo John & Sheena Quinn, came third with 60.7 points, whilst the ‘on paper’ strong team of Jono Baker, Jonny Bramley, Rick Evans & Andy Glen took fourth spot with  61.9.

The late lunch was up to The Berkshire’s normal high standards and, well fed and lubricated, the PGS members and their guests showed their customary generosity, cajoled and cudgelled by Ian McIlgorm’s auctioneering efforts, and raised an impressive £4,925 for the Journalists’ Charity.
