With three players scoring 36 points, the Peggy White Vase was decided on count back on a day that started in the mists of an ethereal Swinley Forest Golf Club.

As the sun broke through the course was revealed in all its sunny splendour, and so was Tim Allan’s game. His 36 points and strong back nine lifted the vase and the Division 2 prize, beating Ben Griffiths (35) and John Quinn (33).

In Division 1, Mark Lomas’ 36 points pipped Rob Hewer’s equal number, with Khalid Javed in third with 35.

A glorious autumn afternoon greeted the foursomes but a typically excellent and generous Swinley Forest lunch took its toll, and the outstanding heights of the morning’s play couldn’t quite be replicated.  Ian Woods & Neil White won the foursomes with 35 points, followed home by Nev Appleton & Khalid Javed (34) with Nick Toksvig & Mike Allen (34) in third place.

Veteran Peter Dazeley’s years stood him in good stead to claim the Harold Lewis Weight for Age Trophy – entry is only open to those 65 and over, and each year above the entry limit equals an extra half shot.

Golden Putter

Mark Lomas journeys down from Manchester to take part in PGS events and did so for Swinley without the aid of his own golf shoes! Sporting a pair of borrowed brogues, Mark’s success meant that his three best finishing places throughout the season were good enough to land him the Sir John Gordon Golden Putter and is crowned the PGS Golfer of the Year!

Entente cordiale – before the final day’s action!

The strongest French team in living memory put paid to Colin Hancock’s PGS team in the Wryter Cup at Golf du Medoc, Bordeaux.

The PGS team arrived in good shape, despite two very late dropouts and some challenging travel issues, but were no match for the powerful French, who featured all their low handicappers.

Unfortunately, the PGS lost every session, going down 5½-2½ in the foursomes, 4½-3½ in the fourballs and 12-4 in the singles to lose 22-10 and give up the Cup which had been won so brilliantly at Hoylake last year.

Special mention to Nev Appleton, who scored three points, and to late call-ups Paul Harrison and Keith Malone, who stepped in with almost no notice.

The French were magnificent hosts, treating us to wine tastings on two nights as we enjoyed the plush surroundings of Golf du Medoc. The sight of Rob Hewer and John Quinn wearing aprons and very little else will scar the memories of all!

Colin was an outstanding captain, marshalling his troops brilliantly and displaying amazing generosity to all. Sorry we couldn’t bring it home for you, Colin.
