The scorched fairways tell the story – pic by Evan Samuel

‘How did you do?’

’39 on the front, 40 on the back.’

‘Shots?’

‘No, degrees Celsius!’

In record temperatures Jonno Baker was too hot to handle, his 38 points burning up the parched fairways of Ashridge and leaving the field trailing in his wake to claim the PGS Memorial Salver. On a day where the ball ran for ever, the secret was to simply ‘find the fairway and sink the putt.’ Graham Marsden and Pip Clothier certainly did that, scoring a very creditable 37 points, normally enough to win at Ashridge, especially off the white tees.

Because of the extreme temperatures, the afternoon Greensomes was, sensibly reduced to 9 holes, with around half the number of players scheduled to compete actually making it to the 10th tee, from where the competition began. Graham Marsden and Jon Jones won the Sir Harry Brittain Trophy on count back, scoring 20 points.
