Botswana? No, Berkshire!                                                  Photo by Khalid Javid

A storming Andy Glen put paid to Jonny Bramley’s attempts to become the first person to defend The Sun Challenge Trophy since Andy himself, who achieved the feat in 2009.

On a sunny and all but windless day with conditions perfect for golf, Andy showed his class by going round the the Berkshire Blue course in just two over to register 41 points, a mere one point ahead of Jonny’s great round. Hugh Whittow came third in Div 1 with 37 points.

In Div 2 Evan Samuel left the rest well behind with 39 points, Ian Woods (33) and John Quinn (32) trailed him home.

In the afternoon greensomes, the rampant Glen, ably assisted by Jim Murray, posted a colossal 48 points to claim the Sir George Sutton Salver on the Red course. Dylan Dronfield & Ian ‘I’m only contributing my handicap’  Woods (41) and Jonno Baker & Rick Evans (38) were the next best teams on the day.

Well done Andy Porter! The victor’s arm is held aloft by the vanquished Ian McIlgorm, who is ambidextrously taking an impressive selfie.

Defending champion Andrew Porter retained his Emsley Carr trophy with a stunning 3&2 victory over Ian McIlgorm, the first successful defence of the knockout competition since Jeremy Chapman in 1980.
The Marquess course at Woburn witnessed some strong play in the final of The Emsley Carr matchplay.  With two birdies in a level par front 9, defending champion Andy Porter got to the turn 3up on Ian McIlgorm.  Big Mac pulled a couple back but couldn’t match Porter’s putting performance, with the Brunswick man holding a one hole advantage as they both finished  ahead of handicap.
The Duchess course was a trickier afternoon proposition and Porter’s accurate iron play eased him 5 ahead  with 9 to play.  The MoS photographer could only claw back a couple and Porter completed his 3&2 victory having never been behind.
A deserved winner, and now looking for a hat-trick next year.  Many thanks to Woburn GC, a great setting for a memorable match.
