Pro Warren Fairbairn, by playing partner Jonny Bramley

Back in the safety of her home in Cork, President Philippa Kennedy summarised the toll taken on players during a glorious golfing President’s Day at Walton Heath: ‘Some of our finest came off the Old Course truly humbled.’  The statistics, if less eloquent than Phillipa, prove the point: overall winner Nic Brook was the only player to even play to his handicap!

One the day other comments backed up the feeling that the course took some taming, including Evan Samuel’s: ‘I’m reliably informed that the fairways were in excellent condition, though I generally only saw them from some way away.’ Nev Appleton, last year’s winner and in the same playing group as Jonny Bramley’s guest, teaching pro Warren Fairbairn, commented: ‘Scratch golfer didn’t make a mark of Walton Heath!’
