The Skipper Does Us Proud
Captain Nev handing Chester Stern, the winner of the Harold Lewis Weight for Age Trophy, a beach towel for no apparent reason.
WITH planes, trains and automobiles providing the soundtrack at Wyke Green Golf Club, Nev Appleton’s Captain’s Day was never going to be a quiet affair.
And so it proved in the clubhouse with Nev ensuring a good time was had by all: providing a host of prizes, ‘balls for all’ and a video show of the day’s action!
Colin Hancock decimated the field with 41 points, winning the Billennium Bowl and Div 2, followed home in the division by Phil Edgar-Jones, 38, & James Bartholomew, 37. Division 1 saw Khalid Javed win with 38 points, just ahead of Paolo Minoli with 37 and Jono Baker amassing 33.
The afternoon scramble, sensibly played over nine holes in the oppressive heat, was won by Nick Toksvig and Evan Samuel with 22 points.
Chris Stevens, pictured below with playing partners Rick Evans and Patrick Eagar, returned to the PGS playing fold following a prolonged illness and was welcomed by all the PGS members present. Yet Chris still had the temerity to take one of the day’s ‘nearest the pin’ prizes home with him!

Special mention goes to Phil Harris, pictured below on his ‘Harley’, who terrorised the prairie-like course on his all-terrain vehicle throughout the day, until he had to push at the end of the 27 holes. Its battery, like many of us, running out of power in the heat!
